Saturday and Sunday Match of the Round Reviews

USC Lion 1 v Old Iggies 0

You just never know what is going to happen in the Premier Division. Many wrote off USC Lion prior to this fixture, as they faced an Old Ignatians side that have set the standard all year. Alas, Lion have been galvanised in recent weeks and did not shy away from the challenge put in front of them. In a game where they missed chances, Iggies will be kicking themselves that they didn’t get more out of this game, as the road to clinching the title becomes more and more difficult.

Opening exchanges of the game saw both sides have chances that they should’ve put away. Iggies were even awarded a penalty, much to the dismay of the Lion defender who did not agree with the decision to say the least. Nonetheless, Iggies could not convert. The rise of Anthony Matteo continued just after half-time, as he showed his class by bringing down a lofted through ball in the box, turning two Iggies defenders and squeezing it past the keeper, 1-0.

Chances went back and forth and both keepers were making save after save, with the game ultimately finishing 1-0. A huge step for USC Lion who are one result away from safety. Iggies may feel as if the league has slipped away from them, but with two games to go we will see what happens.

Elizabeth Downs 3 v Tea Tree Gully 0

Elizabeth Downs seem untouchable at the moment, knocking off yet another potential title challenger with ease. Argana Park was pumping, and this Downs side put on a show for all who came out to witness them take another big step towards not only the title, but an undefeated season.

The first half saw chances for both teams, but neither side were able to gain control over the game. The second half was a different story as the Downs onslaught began with Josh Farrell. The Gully keeper was unable to deal with his low-driven shot, as it slowly trickled over the line, 1-0. Gundlach was causing headaches all game and looked untouchable on the ball. He got himself on the scoresheet for the second week in a row as Scott Lindsay found him with a cross. It was young-gun Bailey Truscott who put the icing on the cake, as his long-range effort put the game beyond doubt and put his side within touching distance of the Sunday Premier Division Trophy.

Downs have the opportunity to clinch the title this week as they take on Salisbury Inter, who themselves have everything to play for as they continue to battle to stay in the division. The Gully will be looking to bounce back and reclaim third spot, with their opponents, tenth-placed Raptors one loss away from relegation.
